ALL ACCESS "pure climbing action"

For our upcoming movie night the U of L Climbing Club presents, "All Access" A film created to support the preservation of outdoor climbing areas. The Petzl All Access DVD contains ten amazing short climbing films:

  • Catching Reality – Emil Sergel
  • Hey Presto – Paul Diffley, Hot Aches Productions
  • Infinity Lane – TLC Productions
  • Medeoz – Guillaume Broust
  • PURE: Sonoma County with Kevin Jorgeson – Chuck Fryberger
  • Steph Davis – Sender Films
  • Steve McClure, Hubble – Ben Pritchard
  • Weeks Before Winter, featuring Chris Sharma – Mike Call

  • One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of All Access goes to the Access Fund and their revolutionary Access Fund Land Conservation Campaign, a multi-million-dollar revolving fund that helps local climbing organizations secure access. Petzl America covered the production costs for the DVD, while the filmmakers donated their work. All Access is an entertaining way for climbers, climbing filmmakers, and Petzl to work together in supporting the access cause.

Date and location for the viewing of this film will be announced over Club e-mail.

CORE exposes the contrast in landscape and lifestyle that defines the sport. A close examination of each character offers perspective beyond just their achievements on the stone.

Be there, in the moment, as a 5.14 traditional route gets its first ascent. See the actual first ascent footage from Livin Large, Nalle Hukkataival's monster 8C. Boulderfest Update

Hey everyone! Only ten more days until Boulderfest! I'm personally encouraging everyone to get signed up for this event. It is without a doubt one of the funniest events on campus. We will have our crew of route setters putting up 45+ fresh problems with cleaned holds but also some brand new holds from soillholds.com. Then on March 20th you get to come down with all your climbing amigos and put yourself to the test. The atmosphere is always amazing with tons of super enthusiast climbers, sick music, wicked problems followed by an award ceremony where we give away hundreds of dollars for gear/swag. (we have lots and lots of prizes, everyone will likely walk away with something)

Keep in mind, Boulderfest is called Boulderfest for a reason. It is a festival not specifically a competition. Sure we hand out score sheets but you are not obligated to hand it in at the end. If you just climb for yourself and have no interest in where you stack up thats totally cool, we get that. Prizes are also going to be distributed at random so the strongest climbers aren't going to walk away with all the amazing prizes. This event is for all climbers from people fresh out of the intro course to people who have been climbing for decades.

You can go down to the climbing wall at any time and pay your sign up fee at the desk. It is $15 for club members and $20 for the public. There are also two time slots to sign up for. One goes from 12:00pm till 2:00pm and the other goes from 2:00pm till 4:00pm. Also keep in mind those are the times that the event will start SO PLEASE BE 15 MINS EARLY.

Thanks! I hope to see your smiling faces on March 20th! Go to www.boulderfest.info for more info.

PS. If you haven't already done so, search "U of L Climbing Club" on Facebook and become a fan. Lots of videos and updates are available to keep you connected.

    The Everest Challenge

So What is The Everest Challenge all about?

On February 27th the U of L Climbing Club and U of L Rotaract will be co-hosting “The Everest Challenge”. The purpose of this event is to raise funds and awareness for the Uphill Both Ways organization created by a local Lethbridge family (The Pritchards). The organization is an education relief fund that is non-denominational, not for profit, relief focused on the education and health care development for children in communities of Nepal. Currently two U of L students, Janelle Pritchard and Drew Andreachuk are both in Nepal working hard to help this cause with money that they have already raised.
Ascent Climbing Centre has kindly donated the full use of the climbing wall for the day to run this event. The U of L Climbing Club and Rotaract Club will be recruiting 13 teams of 3 people to climb. Each team will to pay a $50 sign up fee and are encouraged to get pledges for their team. Starting at 12:00pm on Saturday the 27th of February each team will be expected to climb 45 climbs per team or 15 climbs per person. If each team completes the challenge we will have collectively climbed the elevation of Mount Everest from sea level!

I want to be part of this, what do I do?

Registration will open on Monday January the 18th(next Monday) at 8:00am. The First 13 teams of 3 to submit their registration information will be accepted. (similar to signing up for classes)

What information do I need to submit for Registration?

We need you to email rock.climbing@uleth.ca
    1) An awesome team name
    2) All of your team members names
    3) All of your team members contact information (email, phone number)
    4) Emergency Contact Info
    5) Approximate Climbing skill level (Yosemite decimal system, example 5.10b)

When and where do I pay the $50 sign up fee?

We will be having a meeting on the 25th of January at 5:00pm at Anderson Hall room number 116 where we will pick up your sign up fee and give you your pledge forms and discuss further questions or details of the event.

    Club Meeting/Rush Week

Happy new Years! 2010 is already here and the club already has a bunch of things in the works for this next semester.

    First off,
Club Meeting!-this is a very important meeting please make an effort to come!

The first club meeting will be this Thursday evening at 7:00pm at the climbing wall. Once everyone has shown up we will migrate to an empty classroom in the PE building. If your late for the meeting the room number will be written on the whiteboard at the climbing wall. We will be discussing the Everest Challenge, the reading week trip, boulderfest, movie nights at The Zoo, possible climbing club executive member recruitment and Rush Week. So there indeed is quite a bit to cover and discuss.

    Right Around the Corner-Rush Week!

    - I (Dave Cassidy) will be setting up the climbing club display monday through wednesday(11-13th) next week. The purpose of rush week is to get people who are interested in climbing to join the club. This is great way to meet new people/students and hang out in between classes with your fellow climbing amigos.I'm especially looking for people who went on the Red Rocks trip who can share their awesome experience with new members at the table.

Note that all members must pay the $10 dollar sign up fee! Yes, the old few was $5 but by doubling the few the club will be able to purchase twice as much gear and cover more costs associated with trips, so paying the club fee is really in your best interest. In the past semester the club bought the climbing video progression and purchased food for members at The Zoo ($50), a new rope($120), two anchors ($35), paid for the camp ground at red rocks ($200), and park passes ($60). So if everyone chips in a little bit more the club can do a whole lot more in this semester. Thanks and I hope to see you on Thursday at 7:00pm!
